3 facts about diaper poverty in the U.S. and Illinois:
Financial Strain: The average monthly cost of diapers is around $80, significantly burdening families experiencing diaper needs. This financial strain forces them to make difficult choices between basic necessities [National Diaper Bank Network].
Childcare Impact: In Illinois, like many states, childcare facilities often require parents to provide their own diapers. Nationally, diaper needs can lead to missing childcare due to a lack of supplies, with parents averaging 4 missed days per month [National Diaper Bank Network].
Limited Assistance: Federal assistance programs like TANF can be used for diapers, but these funds must cover many other basic needs. This often leaves little to nothing specifically for diapers, highlighting the gap in support for this essential item [National Diaper Bank Network].
3 facts about period poverty in the U.S. and Illinois:
National Impact: An estimated 16.9 million menstruators in the U.S. live in poverty, making menstrual products a significant financial burden [USC Center for Health Journalism]
Cost Concerns: Despite Illinois eliminating the "tampon tax" in 2016, the overall cost of menstrual products remains a barrier. The lifetime cost of tampons is estimated at $1,800, and prices continue to rise [USC Center for Health Journalism].
Legislative Efforts: Illinois and a few other states are advancing menstrual equity. However, there's a push for initiatives like HB 155 to ensure wider access to menstrual products beyond relying solely on community drives and food pantries [USC Center for Health Journalism].
