Facts About Diaper Poverty
Economic Burden: Diaper poverty refers to the inability of families or caregivers to afford an adequate supply of diapers for their infants or toddlers. It's a significant economic burden, as diapers can be expensive, and for families struggling to make ends meet, the cost can be prohibitive. In the United States, for example, diapers can cost around $70 to $80 per month per baby, which can strain already tight budgets for low-income families.
Health and Hygiene Implications: Diaper poverty can have serious health and hygiene implications, both for infants and their caregivers. Infants left in soiled diapers for prolonged periods are at risk of developing diaper rash, urinary tract infections, and other health issues. Additionally, caregivers may resort to reusing diapers or leaving babies in wet diapers for longer periods to stretch their supply, which further exacerbates health risks.
Impact on Well-Being and Development: Lack of an adequate supply of diapers can impact the well-being and development of both infants and caregivers. Babies who are uncomfortable due to soiled or ill-fitting diapers may cry more frequently, leading to increased stress for caregivers. Furthermore, access to clean diapers is often a requirement for childcare facilities, preventing parents from being able to work or attend school if they cannot afford an adequate supply, thus perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Addressing diaper poverty is crucial for the health, well-being, and development of families and communities.

Facts About Period Poverty
A 2021 survey revealed that nearly a quarter of teenage students in the U.S. experienced period poverty - the inability to access menstrual hygiene products. Furthermore, half of the students surveyed have worn products longer than recommended. (Teenage students experiencing period poverty U.S. 2021 | Statista, 2021)
Lack of access to feminine hygiene sanitary products for women can be a devastating reality as well as a danger to their health, physically and mentally. Many of these women use unhealthy methods including reusing socks, using paper towels, and/or toilet paper which do not protect them from leakage.
Lack of access to feminine hygiene sanitary products can also be a life-stopping issue for girls who may miss school and women who may miss days at work which can affect their paycheck.
